  Featuring works by Mikaela Martin, Águeda Sanfiz, Jena Love, and Angelika Kollin, this exhibition offers four distinctive explorations on motherhood: a dialogue mother-daughter between affection and alienation, a visual essay connecting the emotions surrounding motherhood across cultures and social backgrounds, a conceptual self journey questioning the absurdity of some social conventions regarding maternity, and a portrait collection that celebrates maternal bonding.   The winner of this year’s Photo Laureate competition will need to work with the high and challenging standards set by Thomas Sayers Ellis. The finalists of the 2024 Photo Laureate competition are Christa Moody, David Moreno, José Ramirez, Ric Savid and Marian Tagliarino. They all have well established artistic backgrounds and display a unique photographic language in multiple genres: from photojournalism to environmental portraits and photo collage.   On Sunday, May 5, 2024, the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance (SPAA) will host our third annual Garden Party Brunch, celebrating the impact of the arts on the growth of our city. At Hats Off to the Arts, we will honor Shanna and Bryan Glazer, our "Arts Advocates of the Year", at the historic Snell-Bishop Estate. During the event, guests will mingle outside on the grounds of the historic Snell-Bishop Estate while enjoying special live performances, delicious brunch, and beverages. The event will also feature a live auction and chance drawing supporting the arts. Past honorees include Melissa Seixas, Florida President of Duke Energy, and Brian Auld, President of the Tampa Bay Rays and Rowdies.

  Robert Preston was a photographer and managing editor for St. Petersburg's first daily newspaper, The Evening Independent, and its sister paper the St. Petersburg Times where he climbed the ranks to become their photo editor. Photographer Patricia Preston Mastry inherited her dad's love of photography. The photos on display (and available for purchase) show the similarities, yet stark contrast, of Robert Preston's photographs of 1950s St. Petersburg, compared to his daughter's photographs of today's bustling city.   ABOUT: 

  Photo Laureate Photographer and poet Thomas Sayers Ellis presents the results of a year long collaboration with SPMOP with a visual story of Saint Petersburg and its inhabitants. This story is sometimes comical, sometimes dark. But most of all, it sheds an intriguing light on the mechanism of the Florida tourist industry, the people that keep the city running and the people the city attracts like moths to a flame. By using a mixture of black/white and color photography, digital as well as film, and accidental double exposures, Thomas put together an eclectic collection of images that constructs a multi-layered account of his year.. An accompanying photo book with an extended collection of Thomas's photographs and poems will be presented at the opening. Opening on June 20th. The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, Tampa.
